Venice of the east

Alleppey is one of the most important tourist centers in Kerala. This costal town has a long beach and surrounded by number of canals and lakes. The largest vembanad Lake and Kayamkulam Lake are ideal for backwaters touring and transport. Alleppey is also famous for its spectacular annual event, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It is also a center for coir and carpet industries.

How to Get There

Air : Nearest international airports: Thiruvananthapuram (150 km), Kochi Nedumbassery (85km).

Rail : Alleppey is connected by rail with state capital and other parts of the state.

Road : National highway 47 is passing through this city and easily accessible from all parts of the country.

Backwater Service : There is daily back water cruises to Alleppey from Kollam, Changannassery, Kottayam, Cochin, Kumarakom and Chengannur. The cruise through backwaters with scenic beauty on either side by boat is really an unforgettable experience.


Alleppey Tourism Spots

Ambalapuzha

It is famous for its Krishna temple built with Kerala Architectural style. It is also famous for its Palpayasama milk porridge of exceptional sweetness. It is situated 14 kms. away from Alleppey.

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple

'Kettukazhcha' is very famous and it is a procession of tall decorated structures in chariots where effigies of horses and bullocks are displayed. This festival is celebrated during February / March.

Krishnapuram Palace

Krishnapuram Palace is the center of attraction here was built by Mathanda Varma, the king of Travancore during the 18th century. It contains one of the largest mural paintings in kerala called Gajendra Moksham measures 14 feet by 11 feet. The palace also has a museum of antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes. (Visiting hours : 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on all days except Mondays) Situated 47 km from Alappuzha on the way to Kollam, Krishnapuram is easily accessible by bus from either towns.

Mannarasala


This famous Sri Nagarjuna Temple is dedicated to the king of serpents. This is situated near Haripad, 32 kms. away from Alleppey. The temple is one of the most important centres of serpent worship in Kerala.

Maramon

Kozhencherry is the venue of the great Christian religious convention called 'Maramon Convention'. It is held on the vast sands of the river Pamba. Christians from all over India participate in this convention. 'Maramon Convention' is said to be the biggest religious gathering of Christians in Asia.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race


The most important tourist event in Alleppey is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It was inaugurated by Prime Minster Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952 on the occasion of his visit to Alleppey. It is organised on the second Saturday of August every year, in which 130 feet long snake boats, each manned by over a hundreds of rowers, race through backwaters at high speed and cheered by the spectators throughout its course.

Pathiramanal

In the Vembanad lake there is a small beautiful Island known as 'Pathiramanal', This Island is a favorite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world. The island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom which could be reached only by boat.

Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha beach is quite a popular hangout and relaxation spot in the district of Alappuzha. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is around 140 years old. Blessed with nature's green beauties such as lagoons, vast lakes and numerous fresh water rivers, Alappuzha is a natural wonderland of Kerala state.

The climate of Alleppey is generally temperate and humid and relatively more pleasant in the winter season. The temperature ranges from 22 to 35°C in summer and 20 to 32°C during winters. Annual average rainfall is 310 cm.
