Cochin ( Ernakulam )is located on the west cost of India in the beautiful state of Kerala. Cochin is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea.The commercial capital and the most cosmopolitan city of Kerala, Kochi, in Ernakulam, is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. Kumarakom and Allapuzha districts on the South, Thrissur district on the North and Idukki districts on the East.

How to Get There

Air : Ernakulam district is linked by direct air services with its own airport at Cochin.

Rail : Ernakulam junction and Ernakulam town stations are connected by rail with the nearby important cities.

Road : A good network of road connects Ernakulam with the major towns and cities of the country.

Ferry Service : Kochi and Ernakulam can also be reached by boat through backwaters from the main boat jetty.

Bolgetty Island

Bolghatty is the most beautiful among the all island in the district. This island is situated across the backwaters from the mainland Ernakulam. Bolghatty island, it's famous for the Bolghatty Palace which was built by the Dutch in 1744, but now it is converted as a hotel which is managed by KTDC. The only golf course in Kochi is located here. Boats are available for Cochin to reach Bolghatty island.

Chinese Fishing Nets

The chinese fishing nets are found here, are only ones found in India. It is believed that they have been brought to Kerala by the Chinese traders. it a nice experience to enjoying the sunset close to the Chinese fishing nets.

Cochin Museum

Earlier it was situated at the Durbar Hall, now has been shifted to the Hill Palace at Tripunithura. The collections include 19th century oil paintings, old coins, wooden sculptures, sculptures in stone and plaster of Paris and copies of Mural paintings collections from Cochin royal family.

Apart from these, you can enjoy boating in the backwaters of Kumarakom at about 80 km from Kochi. The famous beach spot near Kochi is Cherai Beach where you can spot dolphins playing in the beautiful blue waters of the sea.

Dutch palace

The Dutch Palace of Mattancherry was built by Portuguese and presented to the Cochin raja in 1555. The Dutch renovated the palace in 1633, hence its acquired the name, The Dutch Palace. It also contains a Hindu Temple in it.

Ernakulam

A place developed on modern lines, it has some museums, Art gallery and popular worshipping places.

Fort cochin

The first fort built by the Europeans in India.

Jewish Synagogue

The synagogue was built in 1568. It has the Giant scrolls of the Old Testament and copper plates, in which the grants of privilege made by the rulers of cochin were recorded and there are interested Chinese painting on tiles can be found here.

Cochin Carnival

The Carnival is Held at Fort cochin on 1st January every year. It is a major crowd puller.

Malayattur

There is a famous Catholic Church situated on a hillock on a height of 609 meters. It is dedicated to St. Thomas who had landed the Kerala coast in 52 AD.

Parikshith Tampuran Museum

The Parikshith Tampuran Museum is an archaeological museum having the collections of 19th century oil paintings, pre-historic monuments, old coins, stone sculptures and plaster of Paris and copies of mural paintings.

St.Francis Church

A famous Protestant church which was built by Portuguese in 1510 AD, is considered to be the first church built by European in India. Vasco da Gama, the Portugese trader who reached India from Europe was buried in the St. Francis Church.

Vypin Island

Vypin Island about 21 kms. from the city is a major centre for commerce and is connected to the main land by a bridge, which is easily accessible by boat. It boasts of a lighthouse at Ochanthuruth open from 3 pm to 5 pm on all days. Ferries shuttle across the narrow strait from Fort Cochin to Vypin Island. They are miles of surf beaches, but bathers would feel most comfortable at Cherai Beach, 5 kms. from the ferry, where one can find a couple of basic cafes and guesthouses. This island also boasts of good beaches and the early-16th-century Pallipuram Fort (open Thursday).

Willington Island

This island is a man-made island created from the dredged while deepending the port. This island is named after Lord Willington, the British Viceroy of India. This island is situated between Ernakulam and Kochi and Muttancherry and separated by back waters. There are Hotels, Tourist offices, Customs House and Naval headquarters are situated on the island.
