Road : An excellent road network links the district to all major towns and cities in India. Idukki Tourism Spots Anaimudi It is the highest peak in south India is situated atop Raja Mala, 2695 meter above sea level. It is 17km away from Munnar. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary The Sanctuary situated on either side of Munnar to Udumalpet road. This is wide range of animals and birds including elephant, gaur and lion – tailed monkey etc. Eravikkulam wild life sanctuary it is situated just 4km from Munnar on the way to Udumalpet. Anaimudi, the highest peak, is in the southern part of the park. It has been proclaimed as National Park since it has a large population of Nilgiri Tahr existing in the world. Idukki Arch Dam The Idukki Arch Dam is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. 550 ft. high and 650 ft. wide, the dam lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. To its west is the Kulamavu Dam. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located closeby. Munnar It is a beautiful hill station with an altitude ranging from 1600 to 1800 meters. This town is situated at confluence of the three streams Nallathanni, Kundala and Muthirapuzha. Once it was the summer resort of the British rulers. There are number of tea and cardamom plantations around this place. Peerumed This is a tiny cool hill station is full of rubber, tea, coffee, pepper and cardamom plantations and also known for its waterfalls. It also serves as a lovely halt on the way to Thekkady which is 43km away. Periyar wild life Sanctuary, Thekkadi It is one of the best in the country. The Sanctuary has an area of 750 sq.km. It lies at an elevation from 900to 1800 meters above sea level. The vast artificial manmade lake across the periyar river, surrounded by the lush green tropical forest is the natural habitate of elephant, tiger, bison, etc. A cruise in lake by boat is a is a trilling experience as one can see herds of elephants drinking, bathing or frolicking in the water along with their young ones. There is a lake palace on a small island in the lake which can be reached by boat. Thattekad bird Sanctuary The Sanctuary has an area of 25 sq.km and lies between the branches of periyar river. There are more than 200 varieties of birds. Thekkady This is the one of best known wild life centres in India. The Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary here, offers a fairly good chance of seeing the great Indian tiger in its natural habitat. Waterfalls Two waterfalls - Thomankuttu and Rainbow Waterfalls - are located at a distance of 20 and 25 km from Thodupuzha. The waterfalls are an ideal destinations for all those who love to picnic in a natural surroundings. The first mentioned waterfall is characterized by seven step and a number of surrounding caves. The second one is surrounded by lush green forests.
